Olive
Next-generation video editing with professional ambitions and zero licensing costs
Olive Video Editor represents an ambitious new chapter in open-source video production, targeting professional-grade editing capabilities without the professional-grade price tag.
Built from the ground up with C++ and Qt framework, Olive aims to compete with industry leaders like Adobe Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro by delivering a fully-featured non-linear editing experience with modern, node-based compositing workflows.
The revolutionary node-based architecture provides unprecedented creative flexibility—instead of a fixed effects pipeline, users can connect any processing node to any other, enabling complex custom effects without writing code. Nodes can be copied as text for easy sharing, fostering community-driven effect libraries.
Current features include unlimited video and audio tracks, hardware-accelerated GLSL effects, advanced cutting tools (Razor, Ripple, Slide, Slip), animatable effect properties with keyframe animation, and picture-in-picture capabilities. The editor provides robust snapping between clips, markers, and playhead with clear visual indicators.
While currently in alpha status (meaning incomplete features and potential stability issues), Olive is making rapid progress with active development. The platform supports Frei0r effects, VST 2.x audio plugins, and proxy clip workflows for smooth editing of high-resolution footage.
Available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, Olive represents the future of accessible professional video editing—constantly improving through community contributions and targeting features like advanced color grading, hardware-accelerated encoding, and comprehensive audio mixing.
